*Media Availability* #LASD San Dimas Sheriff’s Station Would like to Thank & Recognize a Local Resident who Selflessly ran Towards a Burning Car & Saved a Woman
Who: Captain Andy Berg, San Dimas Sheriff’s Station, Deputy Humberto Inzunza and Local Hero Mr. Sebastian Picardi who saved female from a fiery car crash.
What: Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Station and Deputy Humberto Inzunza from San Dimas would like to recognize local resident Mr. Sebastian Picardi, who ran full speed towards a car covered in flames and was able to pull out the driver and save her life.
Where: San Dimas Sheriff’s Station 270 South Walnut Avenue in the City of San Dimas.
When: Saturday, November 3, 2018, 10:00 a.m.
On Thursday November 1st, 2018, at approximately 6:00 p.m. local resident Mr. Sebastian Picardi of San Dimas was walking his dog on San Dimas Canyon Road near Caballo Ranch Road, in San Dimas, when he saw a blue Mustang crash into a concrete barrier. Mr. Sebastian Picardi immediately secured his dog, when he saw the car was on fire. He yelled at another person nearby to call 9-1-1, and he selflessly ran full speed towards the fiery car. He found the driver, a 63 year old woman, unconscious.
Flames were coming through the dashboard into the car, Mr. Sebastian Picardi desperately tried to rouse the woman and unbuckled her seat belt. Mr. Sebastian Picardi said, “I thought she was dead.” Seconds later he noticed she briefly began to regain consciousness, the woman clung to the steering wheel and would not let go. Mr. Sebastian Picardi convinced her to let go of the wheel and pulled her from the engulfed car.
“As soon as I got her out from the driver seat, the car went up in flames,” said Mr. Sebastian Picardi. Deputy Humberto Inzunza was the first patrol unit on scene. Deputy Inzunza found the car on fire and the unconscious driver a safe distance away with Mr. Picardi. The woman was transported to a local hospital where she was listed in stable condition.
Deputy Inzunza later said, “This guy should get a medal. I got there not even a minute after he got her out. By that time the fire was inside the passenger compartment and so hot I couldn’t get to the other side. I honestly believe if it weren’t for him she would have died. I couldn’t get close enough to the car, to even try.”
When asked if he expected to save a life that Thursday evening, Mr. Picardi said, “It really puts life in perspective. My main concern was her. I’m glad she’s okay.”
On behalf of San Dimas Sheriff’s Station and community members, they are very grateful of Mr. Picardi, for his courage and quick action.
Media Note: We are waiting on the attendance & confirmation for the victim of the car fire. She was released from a local hospital but may need more time to recover from her injuries. We will have the video footage from Deputy Inzunza, however it is the scene after the victim was pulled out of the fiery crash.
