The APD Special Crimes Unit has made an arrest in the 2015 homicide of an infant

*** UPDATED INFORMATION November 2, 2018 ***

On November 1, 2018, new evidence in the 2015 murder of Damian Hayes was developed by investigators of the Special Crimes Unit. On November 2, 2018, a warrant for the Capital Murder of a Person Under 10 years of age was issued for Logan Gene Hayes, age 22. The warrant was served at the Potter County Detention Center where Hayes had been booked the previous day on charges not related to the homicide. Special Crimes continues to investigate the City of Amarillo’s only unsolved homicide of 2015.  Preliminary autopsy results revealed that 8 ½ month old Damian Scott Hayes was strangled to death. Special Crimes investigators interviewed numerous individuals who had access to Damian prior to and at the time of the murder and they continue to work closely with the 47th District Attorney’s office.  Lt. Erick Bohannon says, “The Special Crimes Unit will use all of its skills, talents, and available technology to solve this murder.” The Special Crimes Unit is asking for any information that will help solve Damian’s murder.  Please call 378-9468 with any information about this case.

On Saturday, November 7, 2015, officers of the Amarillo Police Department were dispatched to an address on SW 4th Ave about an 8 ½ month old baby not breathing.  Fire Department and ambulance personnel were also called to the scene to tend to the baby’s medical needs.  The baby was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he later died.  The baby had injuries to his upper body but Special Crimes investigators could not determine if those injuries were the cause of death.  Justice of the Peace Thomas Jones ordered an autopsy.  Preliminary autopsy results revealed the baby was strangled to death and this case is now classified as a homicide.  Special Crimes continues to investigate this case and asks for anyone with information about it to call 378-9468.
