UPDATE - 1:36pm
Power outage in southwestern part of Santa Clara due to fatal traffic accident
All lanes of northbound San Tomas Expressway, between El Camino Real and Cabrillo Avenue, will remain closed through the evening commute
A fatal traffic accident involving one vehicle on San Tomas Expressway, just north of El Camino Real, at 10:18 this morning resulted in an electrical outage that affected approximately 2,722 Silicon Valley Power customers in the southwestern portion of Santa Clara.
All lanes of northbound San Tomas Expressway, between El Camino Real and Cabrillo Avenue, remain closed. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and use alternate routes. The road closure is expected to remain in effect through the evening commute hours. The Santa Clara Police Department is investigating the cause of the traffic incident in which a car struck an electrical pole. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Silicon Valley Power (SVP) has restored power to roughly 2,000 customers as of 11:42 a.m. An additional 536 customers will have their power restored within the next hour. SVP estimates that the power will come back on for the remaining 174 customers, who are mostly located north of El Camino Real, several hours after the roadway is reopened tonight.
Affected City facilities included the Central Park Library which also serves as an Early Voting Center location. The power was restored by 11:50 a.m. at the library, located at 2635 Homestead Road. The City’s Community Recreation Center, 969 Kiely Blvd., was without power briefly and power has since been restored. Swim programs at the International Swim Center, 2625 Patricia Dr., were cancelled by the City’s Park and Recreation Department for the late morning as part of the pool’s health and safety protocol. Swim program participants should call ahead to determine if classes will take place this afternoon. Programming at the swim center is anticipated to resume once the power is back on and the water has time to circulate through the filtration system.
