*************** UPDATE ***************

Date: October 31, 2018

Primary Suspect Identified, Additional Suspect Still At Large

We are pleased to report that CCSO Deputy Corish was released from the hospital and is recovering from his injuries.  As a result of an intensive investigation into Monday mornings incident, MPD detectives have identified and charged sixteen-year-old Equawn Marshall from Atlanta.  Based on the crimes committed and evidence collected, Equawn Marshall will be tried as an adult.

The suspect vehicle that struck Deputy Corish, driven by Equawn Marshall, was reported stolen out of Atlanta.  Just before being struck by the front of the vehicle, Deputy Corish was able to fire his weapon at the on-rushing vehicle.  The suspect vehicle fled the scene leaving Deputy Corish lying in the roadway.  MPD officers who were in the area quickly issued a Be On the Look Out (BOLO) and circulated it within the Metro-Atlanta area law enforcement community.  Shortly thereafter, Atlanta Police Department (APD) officers notified us that an uncooperative juvenile, possibly matching our BOLO, was being treated at Atlanta Medical Center for a gunshot wound to his upper body.  They also stated the patient had outstanding warrants for similar criminal activity.  Meanwhile, a Georgia State Patrol (GSP) trooper located an abandoned vehicle matching the BOLO on I-75 with a bullet hole in the windshield.

Thanks to the efforts from law enforcement personnel from multiple jurisdictions, MPD detectives were able to quickly secure physical evidence linking this suspect to the (now recovered) stolen suspect vehicle.  Evidence also links Equawn Marshall to the attack on the CCSO deputy and another burglary incident that occurred on Rock Street earlier the same morning.

Warrant 18-W-10175 charges Equawn Marshall with:

Theft By Taking (F)

Obstruction / Hindering Law Enforcement (M)

Aggravated Assault on an Officer (F)

Aggravated Battery on an Officer (F)

Entering Auto with Intent to Commit Theft or Felony (F)

Theft by Receiving Stolen Property Greater than $1500 (F)

We want to recognize the ability Deputy Corish displayed in remaining calm and courageous even while facing a vehicle speeding toward him.

Chief Dan Flynn noted that he commends all officers, deputies, troopers and their agencies for the rapid coordination and their involvement in this case.

The investigation is ongoing, and we still need to identify the second suspect (photo attached) that fled on foot.  Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact MPD Detective Mark Erion at (770) 794-5335.

********** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE***************

DATE: October 29, 2018

Sherriff Deputy struck by suspect vehicle

Just before 4:00 AM this morning a Cobb County Sherriff’s Office (CCSO) Deputy was monitoring security video when he observed a suspect vehicle pull near their building at 32 Waddell Street and appear to break into a parked vehicle.  The deputy walked outside and confronted two suspects who attempted to flee the area.  One suspect ran on foot while another got back into their own vehicle and maneuvered aggressively toward the Deputy, striking him with the vehicle.  The deputy drew his agency issued duty weapon and fired toward the suspect vehicle during the incident.

At 4:00 AM Cobb 911 dispatched Marietta Police Department (MPD) Officers to the report of a person struck by a vehicle.  The CCSO Deputy has been transported to Kennestone Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  MPD Detectives are working the investigation with CCSO Investigators.

The investigation is active and ongoing.  Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact MPD Detective Mark Erion at (770) 794-5335.
