School Custodian Arrested for Threats to Co-Worker

On 10-29-18 at about 7:50pm, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office deputies took a report from a Toyon Middle School Administrator regarding a possible threat with a firearm by a custodial staff member. Deputies were told that 72 year old Fred Westbrook of Mokelumne Hill works on the custodial staff at Toyon Middle school and he has been having a dispute with another co-worker. Westbrook reportedly threatened this co-worker and also made several statements to other subjects mentioning bringing a firearm to work. When the school administration was made aware of the statements yesterday afternoon, immediate action was taken to ensure that Westbrook was not on campus and the Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate the incident. Sheriff’s Deputies interviewed subjects involved and arrested Fred Westbrook yesterday evening for 422PC-criminal threats. He was booked into the Calaveras County Jail with $50,000 bail. Sheriff’s Deputies are working with school staff, administration, and district officials to complete a full investigation. The criminal threats involving this case stem from a dispute between co-workers and threat of workplace violence. Given that the workplace in this incident is a middle school campus, the seriousness of the situation was recognized and immediate intervention and action was taken. No students were involved in the incident and there has been no reported threats involving students. If anyone has information regarding this case, please call Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch at (209) 754-6500 to speak with a deputy or call the anonymous tip line at (209) 754-6030.
