Suspect steals one vehicle and smashes another

Deputy Robert Watson of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged April Dawn Smith, 40, of 61 Burma Road West in Nebo, with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, damage to property, possession of methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance in jail.
Deputy Jason Cook charged Smith with larceny of a motor vehicle and damage to property.
At 8:41 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, Watson responded to the vicinity of Exit 90 on I-40 eastbound and met with the victim, Brian Jones, of Morganton.
Jones reported that he stopped at Samir’s on Burma Road East in Nebo to get food. Smith pulled up behind him, got out of her vehicle and began beating the window of Jones’s automobile. As Jones was leaving, Smith attempted to block him in, but he was able to get out of the parking lot and traveled to the I-40 eastbound ramp.
Smith pursued Jones and used her vehicle to strike the rear bumper of Jones’s Honda Fit in an attempt to knock him off the road. Jones stopped his car and called for authorities. Smith continued on and was apprehended a short time later by Burke County sheriff’s deputies on Dysartsville Road. It was then discovered that the 2012 Ford Fusion Smith was driving was stolen.
That same morning, John Owens, of Porter Ridge Road in Marion, reported that Smith, who was staying at his house, stole his Ford Fusion. The vehicle was recovered.
After Smith was apprehended and taken to jail, authorities located 4 grams of methamphetamine on her person.
She also faces charges from the N.C. Highway Patrol, including driving while impaired.
