Nor’easter Forecasted – Be Prepared

Fair Lawn Emergency Management is closely monitoring the expected rain and winds tomorrow and we take every potential storm very seriously. The first nor’easter of the season is always tricky because trees are still full of leaves, creating an increased chance of outages from trees and branches downing power lines. Residents should:
· Register for notifications from the Borough at “Notification Sign-Up”. Click HERE to sign-up.
· Make plans to secure your property
· Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed so they are more wind resistant
· Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts
· Bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down
· Stay away from downed wires. Downed wires should always be considered "live." Stay at least 300 feet away from downed wires. Do not approach or drive over a downed line and do not touch anything it might be in contact with.

The Borough of Fair Lawn has a limited number of portable generators available, if not being utilized by emergency services. Residents should make other arrangements, should these generators not be available.

Downed utility lines, blackouts, or storms can lead to power outages. Many residents are turning to generators as a temporary solution. Please remember the following safety precautions when using a generator.
· Generators should be used in well ventilated locations outside away from all doors, windows and vent openings.
· Never use a generator in an attached garage, even with the door open.
· Place generators so that exhaust fumes can’t enter the home through windows, doors or other openings.
· Make sure to install carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in your home.
· Turn off generators and let them cool down before refueling. Never refuel a generator while it is running.
· Store fuel for the generator in a container that is intended for the purpose and is correctly labeled

If you experience a power outage, please call PSE&G directly at 1-800-436-7794. Register for MyAlerts from PSE&G to report outages and get text/email updates about the status of your outage. Just text "REG" to 4PSEG (47734). Report an outage by texting "OUT" to 4PSEG.

DO NOT CALL THE POLICE DEPARTMENT TO REPORT A POWER OUTAGE OR TO INQUIRE WHEN POWER WILL BE RESTORED.
