An employee for a contractor working on a pipeline installation project for the City of Hayward drove over a traffic signal control box at Hesperian and Industrial boulevards and knocked out traffic signals at the intersection at approximately 11 a.m. today.

City traffic signal technicians and consultants are working to repair signal equipment and restore service, and Hayward police patrol officers are directing traffic at and near the intersection.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area to the extent possible until traffic signals are restored or until further notice.
