2 TRACTOR TRAILERS CRASH, BRING MORNING RUSH HOUR TO A CRAWL

Two tractor trailers crashed on Route 1 Thursday morning causing multi mile delays throughout the morning rush hour. At 5:41am a 2015 Peterbilt tractor trailer driven by Michael Luallen age 48 of Baltimore, Maryland was stopped in the right lane of Route 1 north at the intersection of Whispering Woods Boulevard. Mr. Luallen was stopped for a red traffic light when his tractor was struck by a 2015 Freightliner driven by Yoel Chavez age 37 of Hialeah Gardens, Florida that was also traveling northbound on Route 1 in the right lane.

Mr. Luallen was transported by Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad to Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center for treatment of none life threatening injuries.

Officer Sean Roberts investigated the crash and determined that Mr. Chavez had been fatigued and did not realize the first tractor trailer was stopped when he crashed into him. Officer Roberts determined Mr. Chavez was trying to make up time as a result of an earlier flat tire on his trip and was tired when he crashed. Mr. Chavez was issued a summons for careless driving.

The extensive cleanup required Route 1 north to have only one lane open to traffic from 6am to 10am. Three mile delays were reported at the height of the morning rush hour. Georges Towing removed the tractors. The Monmouth Junction Fire Department, Middlesex County Hazmat, and New Jersey State Department of Highway Safety responded to the crash.
