Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill

Norco City Hall and satellite offices will participate in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill today, October 18, at 10:18 a.m. City Hall and satellite offices will evacuate between 10:18 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Please plan accordingly if you need to visit a City facility.

At 10:18 a.m., “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” as if there were a major earthquake occurring at that very moment, and stay in this position for at least 60 seconds. There will not be any freeway closures, power outages, or other simulated effects of the hypothetical earthquake, unless your local government or utility company specifically notifies you about something of this nature. The main goal of the Great ShakeOut is to prepare Californians for major earthquakes, so use today as an opportunity to learn what to do before, during, and after an earthquake.

Prepare for the next earthquake by practicing the following steps: Drop, Cover and Hold On!

DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees.
• This position protects you from being knocked down and also allows you to stay low and crawl to shelter if nearby.

COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand.
• If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter.
• If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall (away from windows).
• Stay on your knees and bend over to protect vital organs.

HOLD ON until shaking stops.
• Under shelter: Hold on to object with one hand and be ready to move with your shelter if it shifts.
• No shelter: Hold on to your head and neck with both arms and hands.
