Coyote Advisory

This advisory is to remind residents about coyote activity.  Certain areas of Newport Beach have seen an increase in coyote sightings in recent weeks.  Coyotes are capable of hunting unattended small pets, including cats and dogs, and residents who have lost pets to these predators are often unaware of coyote activity in their area.

Please review the following tips to protect your pets from nuisance animals like coyotes and other wildlife:

· Fully enclose outdoor animal enclosures, including the top of the enclosure

· Keep cats and small dogs indoors

· Feed pets indoors

· Store trash in covered heavy-duty containers

· Keep yards free from potential shelter, such as thick brush and weeds

· Enclose the bottoms of porches and decks

· Eliminate potential food and water sources, such as fallen fruit and standing water

· Never feed coyotes

Use Negative Reinforcement

If coyotes begin frequenting your neighborhood, let them know that they are not welcome.  Make loud noises, throw rocks, or spray them with a garden hose.  For everyone’s safety, it is essential that coyotes remain wary of humans.

For more information on hazing, please visit the Coyote Information page on the NBPD website.

"Wildlife Watch"

The City of Newport Beach has partnered with the California Department of Fish & Wildlife in developing a “Wildlife Watch” program in our neighborhoods.  Wildlife Watch is similar to Neighborhood Watch.  By giving our community members the knowledge they need to keep their pets safe, and encouraging them to share this information with their neighbors, we can help spread the word about coyote safety and reduce the loss of domestic animals to coyotes.  To help us with this effort, please share the information in this advisory with your local neighborhood groups.
