Flood Warning for McDowell County has been extended until 1 am Friday.

Flood Warning for...
McDowell County in western North Carolina...
Western Burke County in western North Carolina...

* Until 100 AM EDT Friday.

* At 632 PM EDT, excessive runoff continues over the region, and
flows remain high along the upper Catawba River, the North Fork
Catawba River, and associated tributaries. These flows will
continue to cause flooding of low-lying areas and some roadways.

* High flows in the upper Catawba watershed is causing Lake James
to rise as well. According to Duke Energy, Lake James is not
expected to exceed 103.0 feet. However, Lake James will continue
to rise into Friday morning and flooding of campgrounds, docks,
boat access areas, and other areas along the shoreline is
likely.

* The following streamgauge remains above Minor Flood Stage:
Catawba River at Pleasant Gardens.

Current Stage: 11.40 feet and falling steadily.
Forecast: The Catawba River will continue to recede into the
evening hours. A fall below Minor Flood Stage is expected by 8 PM
tonight with a fall below Action/Advisory Stage later tonight.
Action Stage: 9.0 feet.
Minor Flood Stage: 11.0 feet.
Impacts: At 11.0 feet, Minor Flood Stage. The Catawba River may
be starting to flood the Riverbreeze Campground located a few
miles downstream of the gauge, especially if high flows are
occurring along Buck Creek due to spillage at Lake Tahoma upstream.

* Some locations that may continue to experience flooding include...
Marion, Lake James State Park, Lake James, Nebo, Pleasant Gardens,
Glenwood, Ashford, Woodlawn, Sugar Hill and North Cove.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Do not attempt to cross
water-covered roadways, bridges, or low-level crossings. Only a few
inches of rapidly flowing water can carry away your vehicle. It is
not worth the risk. Please TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN.

Please pay close attention to road signs indicating a flood-prone
area. Obey all barricades, even if water is not currently over the
road. After an event road crews need to assess the road to ensure
road stability and safety. Barricades are in place for your
protection.
