Possible scam-personal safety concern

The Amarillo PD wants to remind the citizens of Amarillo that when you are in your own home, you do not have to open the door for anyone, even if they are asking for help.

Last night, a citizen reported that a woman came to their home asking for help, that she was being assaulted. She had no visible injuries and was very insistent on being let inside the person’s home. The citizen who called us, didn't let her inside, however they did call the police for the woman. When the woman found out the police was being called to help her, she left before they arrived. Police checked the area, but didn't find her anywhere.

We want to remind you that this tactic is sometimes used to gain entry into homes, to try to rob the resident, or to scope out the home to later come back during the day and burglarize.  This citizen did the right thing, they didn't refuse to help her, and she might've truly had an emergency.  They called the police, but kept the woman safely outside.

If you’ve had a similar incident happen to you, please remember to call the police at the time of the incident, if possible. Do not let a stranger in to your house, call the police and let us come out and help them.  Contact the APD Crime Prevention Unit if you have any questions at 806-378-4257.
