As Michael approaches from the south on Wednesday, an increasing southeasterly flow of moisture will increase the potential for heavy rain on the east side of the mountains in the afternoon. The main area of heavy rain associated with Michael will spread northeast into the region late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. The threat for heavy rain and flash flooding will be highest during the day on Thursday. The storm will move past quickly, ending the threat from the southwest late Thursday afternoon and evening. * Flash Flood Watch for portions of piedmont North Carolina and upstate South Carolina, including the following areas, in piedmont North Carolina, Alexander, Cabarrus, Catawba, Cleveland, Davie, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, and Union. In upstate South Carolina, Cherokee, Chester, and York.

* Heavy rain associated with Michael will spread into the area beginning early Thursday morning and continuing through Thursday afternoon and early evening. Rainfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches are expected, with the higher amounts possible across the Charlotte metro area.
* The heavy rain and very high rainfall rates could produce dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding across the area. Parts of the Piedmont that had heavy rain last month may be more susceptible to flash flooding and urban flooding. Streams and creeks are likely to rise quickly during heavy rain, and flood nearby low-lying areas.
