October Traffic Safety Awareness and Enforcement Efforts

The South Brunswick Police Department is committed to enhancing traffic safety through education, awareness, and enforcement. Starting in October we will provide monthly advisories of awareness campaigns and enhanced enforcement areas.

October 1st to December 15th  Increase Deer Crashes
There are an estimated 26,000 car crashes involving deer every year in New Jersey and the hazard is greatest during the peak mating season, late October through mid-December, when deer are at their most active. Last year there were 45 deer involved crashes in South Brunswick from October to December.

October 10th - “Put the Brakes on Fatalities”
A national program aimed at reducing highway deaths.  Each year on October 10th, every driver, pedestrian, motorcyclist and bicyclist is encouraged to be exceptionally careful so that for at least one day, there will be no fatalities on New Jersey's roads.

October 21st – October 27th  -Teen Driver Safety Week
This week and every week, parents should have conversations with their teens about the important rules they need to follow to stay safe behind the wheel of a passenger car, truck, or SUV. These rules address the greatest dangers for teen drivers: alcohol, inconsistent or no seat belt use, distracted and drowsy driving, speeding, and number of passengers.

For teens, driving means freedom. That doesn’t necessarily mean safety: most teens find themselves in danger on the road simply because they lack experience behind the wheel.

October 31st -
Halloween Driving Safety

  • Slow down in residential neighborhoods and obey all traffic signs and signals. Drive at least 5 mph below the posted speed limit to give yourself extra time to react to children who may dart into the street.
  • Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs. In dark costumes, they’ll be harder to see at night.
  • Look for children crossing the street. They may not be paying attention to traffic and cross the street mid-block or between parked cars.
  • Carefully enter and exit driveways and alleys.
  • Turn on your headlights to make yourself more visible – even in the daylight.
  • Broaden your scanning by looking for children left and right into yards and front porches.
