Duarte Weekly Crime Blotter 9-16-18 through 9-22-18

Dear Duarte Community;

The following is a synopsis of crimes reported for the week of September 16 thru September 22, 2018
 
September 16, 2018
  • At approximately 12:45 am, deputies responded to a traffic collision in the 2700 block of Royal Oaks Drive, and contacted the driver who collided with two parked cars.  After further investigation, the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.  The driver was a resident of Duarte. 
 
  • While patrolling the 2100 block of Central Avenue, a deputy observed a vehicle make an unsafe lane change, almost colliding with another vehicle. The deputy initiated a traffic stop and contacted the driver, who stated he did not have a driver’s license.  The driver was detained pending an unlicensed driver investigation.  The driver’s wallet was located in the vehicle and he was identified by his CA identification card.  In his wallet behind his identification, the deputy saw a small baggie containing a powdery substance resembling cocaine.  After further investigation, the driver was arrested for driving without a license and possession of a controlled substance.                    
 
September 17, 2018
  • A Petty Theft/Shoplifting was reported at 916 Hamilton Road (Game Stop).  Three males approximately 18-20 years old, walked in and took an X-box, Fire Stick and a Play Station Wheel.  All three then ran out of the store and drove away in a white four door sedan.  The value of the stolen property was estimated at approximately $200.  The incident was captured on surveillance cameras.            
 
September 18, 2018
  • An Arson was reported at 1193 Huntington Drive (Smart and Final). A male who appeared to be in his teens, entered the store and lit a bag of tortilla chips on fire.  The fire quickly spread to the rest of the tortilla chips on the shelves, along with jars of salsa.  The fire was quickly extinguished by a customer using a fire extinguisher before it could spread any further.  Loss was estimated at approximately $350.  The incident was captured on surveillance cameras.  This is an on-going investigation.

September 21, 2018
  • A petty Theft/Shoplifting was reported at 1050 Huntington Drive (Target).  An adult female was observed by store security walking around the store with a large shoulder style bag. 
The female selected numerous store items, then entered the fitting rooms.  When she exited, all she was carrying was the shoulder bag.  After security checked the fitting room and couldn’t locate the merchandise, the female was detained.  After further investigation, the female admitted to responding deputies that she didn’t intend to steal, but the items she wanted were more than she could afford. The female was a resident of Pasadena.             
 
September 22, 2018
  • A Commercial Burglary was reported at approximately 3:45 am at “Walmart,” located at 1600 Mountain Avenue.  An employee was by the loading dock, when his attention was drawn to an adult male running with a bike over his shoulder.  The employee immediately checked the storage bin behind a locked gated area used for storing on-line purchases, and noticed a bike missing.  The value of the stolen bike was estimated at approximately $120.  
 
  • A Petty Theft/Shoplifting was reported at 1050 Huntington Drive (Target).  Store security observed an adult male entering the store with a fan in a shopping cart.  The male walked through the store, selected a blender and placed it in the cart with the fan. He then walked to customer service and returned both the fan and the blender for cash.  After exiting the store he was detained by store security.
 
The male was in lawful possession of a receipt for the fan he was returning, however, used an old receipt for the $89 blender he had just taken and received a cash refund.  After further investigation by responding deputies, the male was arrested for shoplifting.  He was a resident of Pomona.
