GTPD Community Bulletin: Gloucester Township Police Department celebrates Down Syndrome Awareness Month

Individuals with Down syndrome and the many wonderful gifts they bring into the world are a big cause for celebration. During the month of October, the Gloucester Township Police Department reconizes Down Syndrome Awareness Month.  We celebrate the abilities of those with Down syndrome through spreading awareness and inclusion throughout the community.

  • Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21.
  • Down syndrome occurs in people of all races and economic levels.
  • There are three types of Down syndrome: trisomy 21 (accounts for 95% of cases), translocation and mosaicism.
  • Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition.
  • People with Down syndrome have an increased risk for certain medical conditions.
  • All people with Down syndrome experience cognitive delays, but the effect is usually mild to moderate.
  • Positive support from family, friends and the community enable people with Down syndrome to lead fulfilling and productive lives.
  • People with Down syndrome attend school, work, have meaningful relationships, vote, and contribute to society in many wonderful ways.
The Gloucester Township Police Department created a Autism Development Disability Registration (ADDR) form for individuals with Autism or disabilities in efforts to give police quick access in an emergency to critical information about a person who is registered. The registry can provide police with emergency contact information, detailed physical descriptions, known routines, favorite attractions or special needs of an individual with Autism Disorder or other disabilities such as: Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Down Syndrome or any other endangered individuals. To register someone or yourself you can download the form from our website www.gtpolice.com
