Deputies receive LOJACK signal leading to the arrest of Gary Vanleeuwen for possession of stolen property

LOCATION: 25300 block of West Main Street, Lenwood
SUSPECT: Gary Vanleeuwen, age 35 a resident of Barstow
SUMMARY:
On September 28, 2018, at approximately 5:57 pm, a victim contacted Sheriff’s Dispatch advising that an unknown suspect had just taken her vehicle while it was parked at the Shop For Less on West Main Street. The vehicle had been left running with the doors unlocked. Deputies from the Barstow Sheriff’s Station responded and were unable to locate it in the immediate area.
At approximately 6:50 pm, the Barstow deputies received a LOJACK signal for the victim’s vehicle. With the assistance of Sheriff’s Aviation, the vehicle was found traveling southbound on the Interstate 15 Freeway toward the City of Victorville. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Gary Vanleeuwen, stopped the vehicle near the freeway and Stoddard Wells Road and attempted to flee on foot. Deputies from the Victorville Police Station arrived at the scene and took Vanleeuwen into custody. Vanleeuwen was arrested for possession of stolen property and transported to the High Desert Detention Center.
