During the month of June 2018, Thousand Oaks Police Detectives began an investigation of a suspect who fraudulently purchased two motorcycles and an ATV from Thousand Oaks Power Sports totaling approximately $65,000.00 by using another person’s identity. Through the investigation, Thousand Oaks Police Detectives identified Mushin Malik of Los Angeles as the suspect who fraudulently purchased the vehicles. Detectives also discovered that Malik had an active felony warrant for identity theft related charges out of the state of Georgia. Detectives were able to quickly locate and recover the two stolen motorcycles but were unable to locate the ATV. Detectives obtained a search warrant for Malik’s residence located in the 2400 block of Claremont Avenue in the City of Los Angeles. On August 1, 2018, Detectives served the search warrant on Malik’s residence and located numerous forms of fraudulent identification cards and numerous fraudulent credit cards. Malik was not located in the residence. Detectives obtained a felony warrant for Mushin Malik from the Ventura County Superior Court for identity theft and auto theft. Detectives continued their investigation and received information that Malik had fled California and frequented cities in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, and Washington. Detectives worked with local law enforcement agencies in these states but were initially unable to locate Malik. During the Month of September 2018, Detectives received information that Malik was in Seattle,Washington. Thousand Oaks Police Detectives contacted the Seattle Police Department, informed them of Malik’s presence and provided them his identification information. Based on the information provided to the Seattle Police Department, Seattle Police were able to positively identify Malik as a suspect in recent identity theft crimes in their city. On September 27, 2018, Thousand Oaks Police Detectives received information that Malik was again in Seattle, Washington. Detectives worked jointly with Seattle Police Department Major Crimes Task Force and the United States Marshals Service, and located Malik in a residence located in the 1500 block of 9th Avenue in the city of Seattle. Malik was taken into custody without incident and is set to be extradited back to Ventura County. |
