Phone Scams in the Area

SCAMS IN THE AREA

The Sanbornton Police Department was notified of a scam call received by a resident this morning, in which dangerous information was given out. The called claimed to be an investigator in Texas, and the victim's name came up in an investigation. The resident gave out his Social Security Number and date of birth when asked.

The resident was directed to call the Social Security Administration immediately to put a watch on their information. This scammer will no doubt be attempting to commit identity theft. Please remember to never give out personal or financial information over the phone to anyone you don't know.

Also, Chief Hankard received a call from a scammer claiming to be collecting money for a Police and Sheriff's Department fundraiser. As you can imagine, the scammer got an earful before he hung up! Most of these fundraisers are fraudulent when raising money for both police and fire departments. When there are valid fundraisers going on in the area, the departments will be notified. If you get one of these calls and want to verify if it is legitimate, please call the Sanbornton Police Department.

As always, please pass this information to friends, family, neighbors, and especially the elderly. The best way to beat the scams, is to know about them beforehand.

Thank You!
