On September 10, 2018, deputies assigned to Twin Towers Operation Safe Jail (OSJ) intercepted heroin and marijuana, after it had been dropped in a trashcan inside the Inmate Reception Center (IRC) public lobby. Detectives from the Custody Investigative Services Jail Task Force (CIS-JTF) were assigned to investigate the case. The suspect was subsequently identified, and surveillance operations were conducted resulting in the identification of (2) residences associated with the suspect.
On Sunday, September 23, 2018, detectives from CIS-JTF served a search warrant at the two locations in the East Los Angeles area. The search of location 1 resulted in (1) felony arrest and the recovery of an unregistered, modified assault rifle. The suspect in this case had been previously arrested on felony gun charges in a previous case. The search of location 2 resulted in the felony arrest of the identified suspect, as well as the recovery of approximately 52 grams of black tar heroin. The approximate jail value of the recovered narcotics was over $30,000. The heroin was packaged and ready for delivery into our custody facilities.

The Custody Investigative Services Unit is responsible for custody investigations ranging from assaults, gang crimes and regularly collaborates with other LASD investigative units. In keeping with one of the tenants of our departmental mission to maintain a constitutionally sound and rehabilitative approach to incarceration, safety of our inmates and jail facilities is a top priority. We want the public to know personnel assigned to our custody facilities work diligently to keep our jails safe for employees and incarcerated personnel.
