FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
[September 24, 2018]

On September 23, 2018 at 3:05 pm, Golden Gate communication Center (GGCC) notified CHP Units of traffic collision, with an overturned vehicle off of the roadway and down the embankment, which occurred on State Route 84 Eastbound, east of Thornton Avenue. Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the scene and located the overturned vehicle south of the south roadway edge of State Route 84. The officer’s determined this to be a solo vehicle traffic collision with a complaint of pain by the two parties involved. Both parties in this solo vehicle collision, declined transportation and will seek their own aid.

While investigating the original call, officers noticed a vehicle (silver Mercedes Benz CLK 430), unrelated to the current collision they were investigating, buried under heavy brush and tree branches 25 feet west of the current incident they were investigating. The officer checked the license plate (DP-241LU) through GGCC and it returned to a missing person out of Palo Alto. As the officer removed the brush and trees from around the vehicle, they observed a person seated inside in the driver seat. Fire and Medical personnel were on scene to render aid, however they determined the person had been there for an extended period of time and was pronounced deceased at the scene by Fire personnel. Alameda County Sheriff’s Corner responded to the scene and took custody of the deceased who was later identified as missing 66-year-old female Wamaitha Kaboga-Miller from Palo Alto. The Palo Alto Police Department has been working very closely with Ms. Kaboga-Miller’s family and made the notification to her family. This is a sad day and not the outcome any of us ever wished for, our hearts and prayers go out to Ms. Kaboga-Miller's family.

At this time the cause of the collision along with the time and day it occurred are still under investigation. The CHP is primary investigating Department for this collision and we are working hard to try and determine how and when this collision occurred. The CHP will continue to work with closely with Palo Alto PD and would like to thank them for all of their assistance. The #2 and #3 lanes of State Route 84 Eastbound were closed from 4:53pm-7:50pm (approx. 3 hours), while officers worked to investigate the collision and gather information.
