#LASD Century Station Reaching Out To The Community With An 8-Week Spanish Civilian Academy

Century Station’s outreach efforts in developing a growing relationship between the community and local law enforcement kicked off this Thursday, September 20, 2018, as residents, church and business members from within Century Station’s jurisdiction took part in an “8-Week Spanish Speaking Civilian Academy.”

The goal of the academy is to help strengthen the lines of communication between deputies and Spanish language residents of Lynwood, Walnut Park, Florence, Willowbrook, Firestone, Athens Park, and Huntington Park.

Many of the community members participating in the “Civilian Academy” are eager to learn about various topics including Probable Cause, Search and Seizure, Miranda Rights, Traffic Laws, Crime Prevention, Gangs, Complain Process and Role-Playing.

Participates will also have the opportunity to tour Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, to have a better understanding of the custody process and programs offered to those incarcerated.

Upon completion of the program, every participant will receive a “Certificate of Participation.”

The Captain of Century Station, Carey Carter, was excited to bring the neighborhoods together and give the community an opportunity to have a better understanding of the department’s fundamental policies and procedures.

Los Angeles County Sheriff, Jim McDonnell, spoke to participates and thanked them for “being our partners.” He expressed to the community how they are a big part of public safety,  “None of us can do this alone. Public safety is a team sport, and you are a big part of the team.”  Sheriff McDonnell also assured of the department’s transparency, holding personnel accountable to their actions and ensuring that all members of the community would be treated with respect.

Sheriff McDonnell also expressed the importance of prevention-oriented strategies and continues to proactively addressing the causes of crime.

At the end of this great opportunity, participates will gain knowledge, a better perspective of the department and a better relationship with their local patrol station.
