News Story - Social Media Post Prompts Lockdown

Nature of Incident: Social Media Posting Prompts Lock Down Report Number: 18-146118 Location: Newbury Park High School Date & Time: 09/17/2018 - 10:15 AM Unit Responsible: Thousand Oaks Police Department (S)uspects, (V)ictims, (P)arty, (D)ecedent City of Residence Age (P) Newbury Park High School Narrative: This morning, students at Newbury Park High School notified school staff and the school resource officer of suspicious circumstances regarding unusual comments made on social media. Students speculated the comments were possibly threats. Additionally over the weekend, a burglary was committed in the cafeteria of the school. There were specific comments mentioned on the social media posting indicating something would take place in the cafeteria at lunch time. Those comments coupled with the burglary were believed to be suspicious in nature. It was not known if the two incidents were related. The comments made on social media and the fact the school was burglarized led school officials to call the Thousand Oaks Police Department to conduct an investigation. The initial stages of the investigation occurred within 20 minutes of the lunch time hour. The Newbury Park High Administration decided to initiate a soft lock down until the investigation was completed out of an abundance of caution for the safety of the students and staff at the school. The cafeteria and school grounds were searched. No illegal or suspicious items were located. It was determined with regards to the social media posting no crime occurred. Newbury Park High School returned to normal operations within 30 minutes of the lockdown. The Thousand Oaks Police Department is continuing to investigate the burglary.
