Suspect arrested in Sunday afternoon shooting at Walmart in San Leandro
On Sunday, Sept 16th, around 12:35 pm, San Leandro Police units responded to Walmart at 15555 Hesperian Blvd. after numerous calls of a shooting in the parking lot. When officers arrived, they located one victim who had been shot once in the neck. The victim was conscious and alert and was provided medical attention immediately.
A portion of the Walmart parking lot was closed off while officers began their initial investigation into the crime. Officers obtained limited information, learning that the victim was shot while walking in the parking lot by a passing vehicle.
The victim was transported to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley for further care and treatment. San Leandro Police detectives arrived on scene and assumed the investigation. Video evidence from Walmart was located which greatly assisted the investigators in learning the events leading up to the incident.
The video evidence provided vital elements, which included information on the suspect vehicle. Detectives continued to investigate, eventually learning the identity of the suspect and his whereabouts.
Around 6:00 pm last night, just hours after the incident, 29 year-old Israel Jaquez was arrested in San Jose by San Leandro Police detectives. Jaquez' vehicle, the one seen in the video and used in the crime, was also located. A search of Jaquez' vehicle revealed a stolen handgun which is believed to be the weapon used to shoot the victim.
Detectives transported Jaquez back to the San Leandro Police Department where he was booked for attempt homicide and several weapon charges.
It was later learned through the investigation that the suspect and the victim knew each other; however the motive for the shooting is still under investigation. The victim's injuries were not life-threatening, and he has since been treated and released from the hospital.
"This was a violent and deliberate crime that occurred in the middle of the day, in one of the busiest shopping locations in town," said San Leandro Police Lieutenant Isaac Benabou. "Not only did the suspect intent to shoot the victim, but he also had no concern for the other people in the parking lot. Fortunately, no bystander was harmed, and the victim in the case escape serious injury. Our officers and detectives conducted a swift investigation, leading to the arrest of a dangerous person and the recovery of a stolen handgun."
Israel Jaquez remains in custody at Alameda County's Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. His case will be presented to the Alameda County District Attorney on Tuesday, Sept 18th.
Jaquez’ photo is not being released at this time.
