Accidental Drowning in Cass County Pool

Sheriff Richard J Behnke is reporting that his Deputies responded to a address on M 51 in Howard Township on 9/15/18 at 2058 hours. Deputies on scene advised that a birthday pool party was going on at the address. One of the 11 year old male friends attending the party was in the pool along with several other kids. It was noticed that he was laying on the bottom of the pool and was brought back to the surface by other kids in the pool. Parents on scene immediately started CPR and called 911. The 11 year old was then transport to Lakeland Hospital in Niles by SMCAS where he was pronounced deceased. The child’s name is being withheld for respect of the family. The case remains under investigation but appears to be accidental. If anyone has information about this incident is encouraged to call the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan DNR, SMCAS, Niles City Fire Department, Pokagon Tribal Police and Howard Township Fire Department.
