INCIDENT: Evading a Peace Officer with Disregard for Safety, Possession of a Deadly Weapon, Prohibited Person in Possession of Ammunition

LOCATION: Nisqualli Road and Arrowhead Drive, Victorville

SUSPECT(S): Derek Haynes, 33-year old Victorville resident

SUMMARY: On September 12, 2018, Deputy C. Hancock, with the Victorville Police Department, conducted a traffic stop on a silver Honda Civic, after observing the driver weaving from one lane to another.

The suspect, identified as Derek Haynes, a convicted felon on probation, initially pulled to the side of the road but pulled back into the roadway and fled before Deputy Hancock exited his patrol car. Hancock followed Haynes with his emergency lights and siren activated. Hancock pursued the suspect approximately 3.3 miles before the suspect stopped in front of his residence in the 16200 block of Rodell Place. During the pursuit, the suspect violated several vehicle codes, including failing to yield at a stop sign, excessive speed, and crossing over double yellow lines.

After detaining the suspect, deputies searched him and his vehicle. Deputies found suspected methamphetamine and heroin on the suspect and multiple rounds of ammunition and a collapsible baton in the vehicle.

Haynes was arrested and booked at High Desert Detention Center for evading a peace officer with disregard for safety, possession of a deadly weapon, and prohibited person in possession of ammunition. The case was forwarded to the District Attorney’s office for review and consideration of additional charges.
