INCIDENT: WELFARE CHECK

LOCATION: 14500 block of Lighthouse Lane, Silver Lakes

VICTIM: Male adult, 85-year-old, of Silver Lakes


SUMMARY:

Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station Citizen on Patrol member Tom Couch was conducting daily welfare checks for participants in the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department; You Are Not Alone (YANA) program. Couch made calls to an 85-year-old male and when he did not answer, went to his house to check on him and make sure he was okay. When Couch knocked on the door, there was no answer, but Couch heard moaning coming from inside. Couch immediately called for assistance from law enforcement and fire personnel. Couch found the front door unlocked and entered the home to check on the victim. He found the victim lying on the floor having a medical emergency. Medical personnel arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment.

If not for the care and concern San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Citizen on Patrol Member Tom Couch had for the victim, this could have been a grave situation. We would like to thank Tom for his hard work and dedication.

The purpose of this program is to maintain contact with the elderly and disabled people who live alone. This is an important service we are providing to our community. Not only are we checking on them for their safety, but we are also extending to them a hand of companionship. Calls are made on a daily basis to the individuals involved in the program at a time that is designated by that person.
