Crime Alert Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Tuesday, 09-04-18 at 2:45 a.m., a 35-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence after she was involved in a traffic collision with the center median at the intersection of John Daly Boulevard and the entrance of Westlake Shopping Center.

On Thursday, 09-06-18 at 7:33 a.m., Officer Martin and Officer Andrade were dispatched to the area of Junipero Serra Boulevard and D Street on a report of a subject who was lighting pieces of paper on fire on the side of the road. The officers contacted a subject matching the description the dispatchers gave them, and the subject refused to identify himself to the officers. The subject finally gave his information to the officers after they attempted several times to determine his identity. The subject, a 28-year old Hayward resident, was on probation from Alameda County. After the officers searched the subject’s right front pocket of his jeans and found a glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine, they cited him for possession of narcotics paraphernalia.

On Thursday, 09-06-18 at 10:44 p.m., officers arrested a 36-year old Daly City resident for public intoxication after being dispatched to Bismark Street and Mission Street on a report of a female running on Mission Street and urinating in front of a residence.

On Saturday, 09-08-18 at 11:00 p.m., Officer Moody was dispatched to Celia’s Mexican Restaurant on a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. A waitress reported there were three male subjects who were seated at the bar and were being “rowdy”. At 10:30 p.m., the subjects wanted to purchase more alcohol, and the bartender denied their request. One of the subjects took the service refusal personally and began to engage in a verbal altercation with the bartender. The waitress tried to diffuse the situation and asked the subjects to leave. After several attempts to diffuse the situation, the waitress said she turned around and continued to conduct her closing duties. She said as she turned around, she was hit in the back of the head by a metal bar stool. The 24-year old victim realized the barstool was thrown from the other side of the bar countertop by the argumentative male subject. The males left after the bartender called the police. The victim was treated for a laceration on her head and said she would go to the hospital for treatment. This investigation is continuing.

On Sunday, 09-09-18 at 3:33 a.m., Officer Moody was dispatched to a report of a vehicle parked on the center median near the intersection of Hickey Boulevard and Gellert Boulevard. Officer Moody found the vehicle on Hickey Boulevard directly in front of the highway 280 off ramp. The officer said the driver of the vehicle was attempting to operate the vehicle in the ice plant covered median, but the wheels would only spin. While contacting the driver, Officer Moody smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the vehicle. After he conducted some field sobriety tests on the driver, a 31-year old Daly City resident, Officer Moody arrested the subject for driving under the influence of alcohol.

On Sunday, 09-09-18 at 7:17 p.m., Officer Ortiz and Officer Tualaulelei contacted a male and female sitting in a vehicle with expired registration in the Mission Plaza parking lot. The male passenger, a 60-year old transient, was out of compliance of his sex offender registration requirement. After the officers advised the subject about his status as a sex offender, they said he became nervous. The subject admitted to having marijuana in his pocket, as well as a glass pipe in his bag. The owner of the vehicle arrived on scene and allowed the officers to search his car. Near to where the subject was sitting, the officers found a cigarette box containing a zip lock bag with a large quantity of methamphetamine. The owner repeatedly said it wasn’t his, and the subject admitted it was his. Officers arrested the subject for possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute and for failing to register as a sex offender.

On Sunday, 09-09-18 at 11:58 p.m., Officer Tualaulelei and Officer Ortiz were on patrol in the area of Edgeworth Avenue and 90th Street when they saw a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign. They stopped the vehicle at 90th Street and Sweetwood Drive. Since both the driver and the passenger of the vehicle did not have a driver's license, Officer Tualaulelei advised the driver he would be towing the vehicle. The officer asked the driver to step out of the vehicle, and the driver gave the officer consent to search him. The officer did not find any illegal contraband. The officer asked the passenger if he had anything illegal on him, and the passenger said he did and revealed a plastic twisted bindle with a small zip lock baggie containing methamphetamine. When Officer Tualaulelei searched the vehicle prior to it being towed, he found what appeared to be a black pistol firearm from under the driver’s seat. The officer realized the firearm was actually a black plastic BB gun, but the orange muzzle was colored over in black—making the BB gun to appear as a real firearm. The driver, an 18-year old Daly City resident, said he didn’t use the gun to commit any crimes and didn’t know why he did colored over the orange muzzle. The officer cited the subject for driving without a license and for possession of an altered imitation firearm. The officer cited the other subject, a 28-year old Daly City resident, for possession of a controlled substance.

Around mid-August, we were notified of a suspected “brothel” at a residence on the unit block of Glenwood Avenue. Residents had reported to the Westlake Patrol personnel that they have been seeing people coming and going from the residence and that an older Asian female wearing elbow-length gloves had been using the shared laundry room only to wash white hand towels. Our Crime Suppression Unit began surveillance on the residence, and on Friday, 09-07-18 at 5:30 p.m., they conducted a sting operation and discovered it was, indeed, an active brothel. A 31-year old female San Jose resident was the victim of pimping and pandering by a 62-year old female Alhambra resident. The 62-year old was placed under arrest, and the 31-year old was referred to Victim’s Services for support. Two other subjects, a 47-year old Hillsborough resident and a 43-year old Daly City resident, were inside the residence and were arrested for soliciting prostitution.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. Please note: the City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
