The National Weather Service in Paducah has extended the

* Flash Flood Warning for... Perry County in south central Illinois... White County in southeastern Illinois... Wayne County in south central Illinois... Wabash County in southeastern Illinois... Jefferson County in south central Illinois... Edwards County in southeastern Illinois... Franklin County in south central Illinois... Hamilton County in south central Illinois...

* Until 445 PM CDT.

* At 116 PM CDT, significant flooding was ongoing across Jefferson, Perry, Wayne and northern Hamilton counties. Evacuations are underway in the Mount Vernon area. Several roads are under dangerous flowing water. Numerous roads are closed. 2 to 3 or more inches of rain since mid morning has been reported. The back edge of the rain was from around Fairfield south to McCleansboro. The rains will let up through 3 p.m. However, flooding is likely to increase over northern portions of Edwards and Wabash counties, and continue elsewhere.

Instructions:

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Keep children away from storm drains, culverts, creeks and streams. Water levels can rise rapidly and sweep children away. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, country roads, farmland, and other low lying spots.
