Crime Alert Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Monday, 08-27-18 at 9:32 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 400 block of A Street on a report of an assault with a deadly weapon that just occurred. The reporting party, a 50-year old process server, said he attempted to serve paperwork to a subject in one of the apartments, and the subject opened his living room blinds to speak with the reporting party. The reporting party told the subject he did not want to talk to him about personal matters out loud. The reporting party said the subject opened his front door holding a “white tube”, and proceeded to use the tube to push him and hit him several times. The reporting party said he tried to defend himself and used his leg to kick the subject away from him. The reporting party said the subject then went back into his residence and grabbed an object, possibly an antenna, and began striking him in the back and arm as the reporting party ran towards the front entrance of the apartment complex. The reporting party was able to distance himself and called 9-1-1.
Officers obtained an arrest warrant for the 51-year old suspect, and they arrested him at his residence on Friday, 08-31-18.

On Tuesday, 08-28-18 at 3:57 p.m., Officer Digiacomo and Officer Hepler were dispatched to a residence on the 800 block of Lausanne Avenue on a report of a family disturbance. The reporting party said her grandmother called her saying the reporting party’s uncle was causing a disturbance at her residence—accusing her mother of stealing his marijuana. The grandmother tried to intervene, and the male started yelling. The reporting party said her uncle had been drinking all day and believed he was drunk. The mother and grandmother left the residence after the subject yelled at them. The grandmother was concerned and wanted the officers to find the subject because he had been drinking and left the residence in his vehicle. As the officers were standing in the front yard of the residence, they saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed (approximately 50 mph in a 25 mph zone) and the subject in question parked the vehicle in the driveway. The officers said the subject opened the driver’s side door and attempted to exit the vehicle, but the vehicle started rolling back as the subject left the engine running and did not place the vehicle into the park position. The subject, a 51-year old Daly City resident, said he had just woken up from a nap and left the residence to try to find his sister because she stole his marijuana from his bedroom. The officers conducted field sobriety tests on the subject, and they arrested him for driving under the influence after failing the tests.

On Wednesday, 08-29-18 at 2:34 a.m., Officer Tualaulelei was on patrol in the area of Hickey Boulevard and Callan Boulevard and saw a lone subject standing outside his parked vehicle. The officer said as he walked up to the subject, he noticed another male facing the perimeter fence of the cemetery and was urinating along the fence line. The officer asked the subjects what they were doing, and they said they were “just hanging out”. The second subject apologized for urinating. Officer Tualaulelei asked the first subject if he had anything illegal on him, and the subject said he did not. Officer Lechleitner arrived to assist, and the officers found two different mint containers that contained several zip-lock baggies containing a white rock-like substance and a white powdery substance in the subject’s pants pocket. They found a larger mint container with more zip-lock baggies with a white crystalline substance in them in the subject’s jacket pocket. Officer Tualaulelei also found a substantial amount of currency in the subject’s pants pocket and also a little more methamphetamine inside of the vehicle. The first subject, a 40-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine and cocaine) for sales. The second subject, a 32-year old San Francisco resident, did not have anything illegal in his possession and was released.

On Wednesday, 08-29-18 at 1:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to a panic alarm at the Bank of America on Mission Street. The 26-year old teller said she was at her window when a male subject approached her station and wanted to make a transaction. The teller said the subject handed her a note saying he wanted money and had a bomb. The teller pressed the panic button and tried to stall the subject until he told her to hurry and demanded money. The teller said the subject left the bank without the money. When the subject exited the bank, he then attempted to carjack an occupied vehicle in the parking lot. The subject was unsuccessful in obtaining the vehicle, and he walked out of the parking lot. The officers found the subject at the nearby Taco Bell parking lot. The subject, a 43-year old Rio Vista resident, was arrested for robbery, carjacking and for a bomb threat.

On Wednesday, 08-29-18 at approximately 7:25 p.m., a 24-year old San Francisco resident was sitting and waiting for her friends at the fountain area of the Century 20 theaters when an unknown juvenile snatched the victim’s iPhone 7 from her hands. The victim described the suspect as a black male, approximately 17-years old, wearing a black jacket with a white hooded sweatshirt underneath the jacket. The suspect was last seen running eastbound from the fountain toward Marchbank Park.

In the last bulletin, I wrote about a 49-year old Uber driver who was the victim of a robbery of his cell phone by a passenger that occurred in the Target parking lot at the Serramonte Shopping Center. On Thursday, 08-30-18 at 3:14 p.m., officers arrested the suspect, a 34-year old Daly City resident, for this crime!

On Thursday, 08-30-18 at 10:18 p.m., Officer Graner and Officer Bermudez were dispatched to the Burlington Coat Factory store on a report of a female who may be attempting to steal merchandise who locked herself in the restroom for four hours. The manager said she went in to check on the female several times but never received a response from her. The manager said at one point, she went inside the bathroom and saw an unresponsive female on the floor inside of the stall. The manager said several times in the past, she has asked the female to leave the store because she stole merchandise. The officers entered the bathroom and saw a person’s shoes under the door of a stall. Officer Brenes arrived to assist, and she knocked on the door to the stall and opened it, after receiving no response. The officers saw a female seated hunched over on the toilet, and she was unresponsive. The female had a pair of pliers in one hand, and there was a bloody hypodermic needle on the floor in front of her. After several attempts to obtain a response from the female, officers said she began to acknowledge them. The female told them she had fallen asleep. The officers asked the female if she had anything illegal in her possession, and the female said she did not. The officers asked if they could search her belongings, and the female gave consent. While Officer Graner was speaking with the subject, he noticed her eyelids were droopy, her posture was hunched, and her face was sweaty. Officer Graner found several bags of sealed hypodermic needles, as well as multiple, used uncapped hypodermic needles. Officer Graner also found bottle caps containing a sticky-tar like substance on them. The subject admitted to being a heroin user and to have used heroin earlier in the day. After officers conducted tests on the subject to determine if she was under the influence, they arrested the 33-year old transient female for being in under the influence of a controlled substance, being in possession of a controlled substance, and for possession of narcotics paraphernalia.

On Sunday, 09-02-18 at approximately 6:34 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Starbuck’s on Gellert Boulevard on a report of two subjects physically fighting with knives. The victim, a 39-year old Redwood City resident, said he was waiting for the bus and had yelled out an expletive as he was frustrated with the bus schedule. The 39-year old transient suspect was at the bus stop as well and thought the victim was yelling at him. A fight ensued, involving a knife, but the victim did not sustain any injuries. The suspect was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and for committing a felony while out on bail.

Scams/Other

Gold Jewelry Scam

On 08-27-18 at 7:30 p.m., a 71-year old South San Francisco resident contacted Officer Magalong at the Serramonte Shopping Center and wanted to report a theft that occurred earlier in the afternoon. The victim said between 12:00 and 12:30 p.m., he had parked his vehicle near the Firestone Tire shop and was late for a casino bus parked on Callan Boulevard. The victim said an older model brown Toyota SUV drove beside him, and a passenger in the vehicle shouted to him, “Hey grandpa, how old are you?” The victim said they began to have a conversation, and the subject told him her father passed away and she wanted to give him some gold jewelry. The victim said the subject asked him to come closer, so she could place a gold chain around his neck. The victim said the subject also gave him a second gold chain and two yellow men’s rings. The victim said the Toyota drove away in the parking lot while he rushed to catch the tour bus. The victim said he realized his own gold chain was missing from his neck and that the gold jewelry was actually metal. The victim described the subject as an Indian female, 30-40 years old, wearing a green sweater. He estimates the value of his own chain at $900.

PG&E Scam

I have reported on this in the past, and I want to let you know this scam is on the rise. We received two reports this past week from people who said they have received telephone calls from a subject claiming to be from PG&E and threatening to turn off the power immediately if they do not make payments in the form of gift cards to them. Please know this is probably a scam. Should you receive a call such as this, please contact PG&E directly to make validate the story.

Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there.
