INCIDENT: Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Evading a Peace Officer with Disregard for Safety

LOCATION: Amargosa Road and Bear Valley Road

SUSPECT(S): Cory David Bowman, 33-year old Phelan resident


SUMMARY: On August 28, 2018, a loss prevention officer for Walmart reported contacting a suspect shoplifting at the store. During the contact, the suspect had his hands in his pocket and threatened to harm the employee with a gun if he was not allowed to leave. The suspect got into a 2005 Hyundai Accent and drove away from the store.

Deputy E. Oliveros, from the Victorville Police Department, was the first deputy to arrive and noticed the Hyundai leaving the parking area and heading west on Bear Valley Road. Oliveros attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspect failed to yield, leading Oliveros and assisting deputies on a pursuit. The suspect ran several stop signs before driving into the desert near Cobalt and Powerline Road. He continued through the desert for a short distance before getting his vehicle stuck. Deputy Oliveros and Deputy K. Campbell were able to catch the suspect as he ran from his vehicle.

Deputies recovered a handgun along the pursuit route, and believe it is the handgun the suspect used to threaten the victim. A records check revealed the gun was reported stolen in San Bernardino.

The suspect, identified as Cory David Bowman, is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing firearms. Bowman was booked at the High Desert Detention Center for felon in possession of a firearm and evading a peace officer with disregard for safety. The case was sent to the District Attorney’s Office for review and consideration of further charges.
