Narrative:

On 08/22/2018, a male transient was arrested for attempting to kill a victim with a knife in the intersection of East El Roblar Drive and South Lomita Avenue.  The suspect was identified as a local area transient, Jacob Hooper.

At approximately 6:56PM, Sheriff’s Dispatch received multiple calls for a male suspect chasing another man with a knife.  Deputies responded to the intersection and contacted Hooper as he attempted to flee the scene.  Hooper was taken into custody and a 3 ½ inch knife was found in his possession.

Hooper had contacted the victim on the sidewalk in front of a local business.  After a brief conversation, Hooper verbally threatened the victim’s life, removed the knife from his pocket, and swiped it at the victim.  The victim was able to avoid Hooper’s attack and fled into a neighboring business.  Hooper pursued the victim into the business and attempted to stab the victim multiple times.  The victim fled the business and ran across the intersection to a neighboring parking lot.  Hooper pursued the victim to the parking lot where he was confronted by an off-duty law enforcement deputy.  Hooper stopped his assault and fled the scene.  With the help of the victim and multiple witnesses, responding deputies were able to quickly identify Hooper as the suspect, and take him into custody. The victim was not injured from the assault.

Hooper was arrested and booked into the Pre-Trial Detention Facility. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office filed the following felony charges:

Penal Code Section  664/187, Attempted Murder
Penal Code Section 245(a)(1), Assault with a Deadly Weapon
Penal Code Section 422, Criminal Threats
Penal Code Section 21310, Carrying a Concealed Dirk or Dagger.

Hooper remains in custody on $500,000 bail. Hooper’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 7th at 1:30PM.

The Ojai Police Department Detectives are conducting follow-up investigations on the incident.  If you have any information or were a witness to the incident, please contact Station Detectives at (805) 477-7038.
