On Friday, August 17, 2018, a total of 71 polished recruits lined up on the grinder at the North Academy, located on the College of the Canyons campus, in what would be their final platoon formation as academy classmates. After 22 weeks of rigorous academy training, the recruits pressed through an equally intense and meticulous formal class inspection by law enforcement executives just before the ceremony.
The ceremony was a formal transformation of academy recruits into sworn peace officers. Academy Class 430 is made up of ten female and 58 male deputy sheriffs, and one female and two male police officers from the Glendale, Inglewood and Los Angeles School Police Departments.
Sheriff Jim McDonnell presided over the graduation ceremonies, and delivered encouraging remarks to the graduates and their guests.
Sheriff McDonnell was joined on stage by Glendale Police Chief Povilaitis, Inglewood Police Chief Mark Fronteratta and Los Angeles School Police Chief Steven Zipperman in presenting the graduates with their Peace Officer Standards and Training certificates, before officially swearing them in as California peace officers.
Sheriff McDonnell in a speech to the new recruits said, "You come out of an academy that has drilled you, that has instilled in you what you bring to the table. When you roll up on a call or a situation in a custody environment or where ever your duties take you, your going to be in a position where all eyes are on you and people will expect you to do the right thing."
In a special segment of the ceremony, Vincent Fratianne, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was named as the class Honor Recruit. This award is earned by the recruit who achieves the highest numerical average based upon leadership qualities, academics, marksmanship, and physical performance throughout the training period. Andrew Makins, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was named the Academic Recruit for earning the highest academic scores.
Each class of recruits processed through the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Training Academy brings together a collection of unique aspects, qualities and experiences. Academy Class 430 claims a vastly international collection of backgrounds, reflective of the vast array of cultures found within Los Angeles County. Of the 71 graduating recruits, nine were born outside the United States in the countries of Armenia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, and the Philippines; ten recruits lived abroad in the countries of Armenia, El Salvador, Indonesia, Mexico, and the Philippines; and 33 speak a language other than English, including Armenian, Bahasa, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, and Ukwani.
In addition to the social enrichment and mindfulness these graduates bring to enhance our agency, they also carry a substantial source of education with them, with 23 holding a bachelor’s degree or higher in Biblical Studies, Business Management, Criminal Justice, Human Development, Human Services, International Business, Mathematics, Media Arts and Animation, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology
We proudly recognize the nine recruits who served in the military, three of whom served in the United States Army and six of whom served in the United States Marine Corps, and the 13 recruits with previous experience at other law enforcement agencies.
We give a special thanks to the 21 recruits with family members serving in law enforcement, who carry on a proud and honorable family tradition.
