UPDATE #LASD Homicide Dets are Responding to Investigate a Deputy Involved Shooting near Lennox Bl/Firmona Av, Lennox

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into a deputy involved shooting that occurred in the early hours of Friday morning. The incident occurred on Friday, August 17, 2018, at approximately 1:13 a.m., near the intersection of Lennox Boulevard and Firmona Avenue, in an unincorporated area of Lennox, California.

Deputies assigned to the South Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station conducted a traffic stop on the 4800 block of 119th Place of a Honda Accord.  As deputies contacted the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, now identified as the suspect, he appeared to be incoherent.  At the onset of the traffic stop, deputies observed that the suspect had turned off his vehicle.  At a certain point during the same traffic stop, the suspect turned the vehicle back on as the deputies noticed a firearm in the vehicle.  The suspect placed his vehicle in reverse, drove backwards, and struck one of the deputies.  That deputy sustained minor injuries to his left leg.

The suspect fled the location in his vehicle as deputies reentered their patrol vehicle, and initiated a vehicle pursuit.  The vehicle pursuit lasted approximately one minute.  During the course of the pursuit, the suspect vehicle struck an unoccupied vehicle that was stopped by the California Highway Patrol on Inglewood Avenue and 111th Street in an unincorporated area of Lennox.  No CHP officers, or the occupants of the stopped vehicle were injured.

The pursuit concluded near the intersection of Lennox Boulevard and Firmona Avenue in the unincorporated area of Lennox after the suspect’s vehicle collided into a pole and fence.  Deputies attempted to make contact with the suspect at which time a deputy involved shooting occurred.  The suspect was struck at least twice, once in the left leg and once in the lower torso.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

A firearm was recovered inside the suspect’s vehicle and there are no additional suspects.

There is no additional information and the investigation is ongoing.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.  Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.  Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process.  The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
