The Sheldon Fire District and Sheriff's Office personnel responded to a structure fire at the Family Dollar store, Gardens Corner at approximately 7:30 last night. When they arrived, first responders observed the store was fully engulfed in flames and neighboring fire agencies—Burton, Marine Corps Air Station and Parris Island, as well as fire agencies from Jasper and Hampton counties—were requested and responded to assist. Fire personnel were successful in containing and extinguishing the fire, but five firefighters from the Sheldon and Burton fire districts sustained injuries—heat related, minor burns and an ankle injury—in the process.

The store suffered substantial damage as a result of the fire and arson is suspected to be the cause. Investigators from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division's Arson Team were requested and are now at the scene assisting Sheriff's Office investigators in determining the origin of the fire and collecting evidence. No suspects have been identified as of this time.
