Advisory

Suspicious Item Discovered at 6401 Shellmound St.

Today at about 2:10 pm, the Emeryville police department received a report of a suspicious item in a garage level storage room at 6401 Shellmound Ave. A maintenance worker at the complex discovered the device which was cylindrical and approximately 10 inches long. Officers arrived on the scene and investigated the report. The officers were not able to rule out the item as being an explosive device and summoned assistance from the BART Police Department, Explosive Detection Canine teams and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team (EOD).

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office EOD team used a small controlled explosive device to render the suspicious item safe. The Emeryville Police Department detectives took over the investigation and are currently working on collecting evidence and gathering witness statements.

We are seeking the public’s assistance in gathering information about the circumstances that occurred at the complex prior to the discovery of the suspicious item. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Emeryville Police Department, Criminal Investigations Section at (510) 596-3700.

The roadways which were closed during this incident have been reopened. The entire complex at 6401 Shellmound St. was searched and no other suspicious items were discovered.

The Emeryville Police Department and its staff are committed to increasing the safety of the City and preventing incidents like these. As always, “If you see something, say something.”
