Culvert replacement project will close SR 20 near Cusick for seven days starting Aug. 20
A signed 8-mile detour will be available
CUSICK – Travelers who use State Route 20 between Usk and Cusick in Pend Oreille County will need to allow extra travel time starting Monday, Aug. 20, as a seven-day full closure begins to replace a failing timber structure under the roadway.
The timber structure was constructed in 1950 to allow cattle to cross under the road. The wood has since rotted and will be replaced with a high-density plastic culvert for water passing under the roadway.
Starting at 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 20 through Sunday evening, Aug. 26, contractor crews for the Washington State Department of Transportation will close the road, remove the old timber structure, install the new culvert, repave and restripe the road. A signed, 8-mile detour for vehicles will be available using McKenzie, Westside Calispel and Cusick Meadow roads. Pedestrians and people on bicycles will be detoured between Usk and Cusick on Kings Lake Road, River Road and Monumental Way.
This work was scheduled around several community events along SR 20 and will be complete before school starts. Travelers should allow extra travel time and stay alert on the detour route, as it will have heavier-than-normal traffic volumes.
“We know closures can be frustrating, so we compressed the schedule and will have the contractor working seven consecutive days to complete the project as quickly as possible,” said WSDOT Project Engineer Mark Allen. “We thank travelers in advance for their patience during this critical construction.”
