Major Cliff Kelker is wrapping up the last few days of his distinguished 27-year career with the Marietta Police Department. Last night, Jonesboro Mayor Joy Day and the Jonesboro City Council selected Cliff Kelker to become their new Chief of Police! Cliff will take over as the Chief of Jonesboro Georgia Police Department Monday August 20, 2018.
During his 27 years with the Marietta Police Department Major Kelker served in nearly all capacities and assignments including patrol, investigations, community outreach and administration. Endearingly referred to as “Robocop” and eventually just “Robo” by Marietta residents, Major Kelker has made immeasurable contributions to public safety in Marietta. Chief Flynn noted that probably Major Kelker’s most important and lasting contribution has been in the form of introducing the department to the philosophy and methods of Procedural Justice. Procedural Justice is a means of enhancing police community relations by opening lines of communication. Major Kelker volunteered to become trained as a Procedural Justice instructor and then championed it, personally teaching it to the entire MPD and members of the Marietta community.
Less than one year ago we were celebrating the fact that (11) previous Marietta Police Officers have been selected to become the Chief of another Police Department (just in the last twenty years). Cliff Kelker now joins them as the TWELTH Marietta Officer to be selected as Chief of another Police Department (not counting the additional officers who went on to various ranks within Sheriff’s Offices). While we will all miss him here, words cannot express how proud we are of Cliff and excited about all the future holds for him in Jonesboro! We consider ourselves fortunate to be part of such a great city government that invests in its employee’s professional development. The Marietta Police Department is nationally accredited (CALEA) as well as state certified (GACP) and continually strives for excellence in all that we do.
