1st Update is as follows:

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide detectives continue to investigate a Deputy-Involved shooting that occurred on Friday, August 10, 2018, at approximately 1:00 p.m., at Lakewood Sheriff’s Station.

Homicide detectives have learned, the suspect was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle. He was booked and placed inside the station jail. He was waiting to be fingerprinted by the station’s Custody Assistant.

The Custody Assistant brought the suspect out to be fingerprinted so he could be positively identified at the station. As the suspect was being fingerprinted, the suspect turned and punched the Custody Assistant in the face.  The Custody Assistant fell down to the ground and while she was on the ground, the suspect took possession of the Taser that was attached to her hip.

The Custody Assistant managed to hit the panic button located inside the station jail, which immediately set off an alarm and alerted the watch commander along with all station personnel to request immediate assistance.

The suspect grabbed the Custody Assistant by the hair and dragged her into a holding cell. The watch commander and deputy personnel responded to the holding cell where they saw the suspect pointing the Taser in their direction while holding down the Custody Assistant.
The Watch Commander directed deputies to grab their firearms and bring them inside the jail. Deputies attempted to de-escalate the incident but the suspect refused to comply. Deputies used pepper spray on the suspect but it did not stop the suspect from continuing his assault on the Custody Assistant.

Lakewood deputies brought their firearms into the station jail but the suspect closed and locked the holding cell door on them. Deputies managed to open the holding cell door using another set of jail keys.

After several commands to surrender, the suspect pointed the Taser at them. Deputies fearing the suspect was going to deploy the Taser at them and would not stop his assault on the Custody Assistant, fired at least one round at the suspect striking him in the upper torso area.

The Custody Assistant managed to crawl out of the holding cell. Deputies attempted to close the holding cell door but the suspect continued to resist the deputies by trying to keep the door open. A deputy used the cuffing port door of the holding cell door and deployed his Taser, which immediately incapacitated the suspect.

The Custody Assistant, a female adult was taken immediately to the local hospital where she is listed in stable condition.

The suspect, a male adult was also taken to a local hospital where he is listed as stable but in critical condition.

The investigation is on-going and there is no further information available.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.  Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.  Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process.  The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
