UPDATED RELEASE: Disaster Relief Fund-Application for Financial Assistance

Disaster Relief Fund Committee Releases Application Instructions

Sun Prairie was rocked by an explosion and fire that engulfed a large section of its downtown on the evening of July 10. The next day, the Bank of Sun Prairie created a fund to collect support for people and businesses who had been affected by the disaster. The Sun Prairie community and beyond have been extremely generous in responding to the disaster and those funds are being held at the bank.

Since the disaster, the bank has been working with Sunshine Place, a community organization based in Sun Prairie, to extend aid to several individuals and families that were displaced by the disaster and that assistance continues. Anyone who has been displaced and needs assistance is urged to contact Sunshine Place at 608-825-3875.

Recently, the Sun Prairie Disaster Relief Committee was created to oversee distributions to individuals and businesses who were affected. The Committee consists of 15 members from the Sun Prairie community including Bank of Sun Prairie President & CEO Jimmy Kauffman and Sun Prairie Mayor Paul Esser who are co-chairs of the Committee. United Way of Dane County is assisting the Committee in developing an online application and evaluating the requests.

Impacted employees or business owners located in the affected area needing assistance are also being asked to submit an application. The application form can be accessed on the United Way web site at:

https://www.unitedwaydanecounty.org/get-help/sunprairiestrong/

Impacted residents who live within a half mile of North Bristol and Main Streets that are seeking assistance should directly contact Sunshine Place for assistance, or complete the online application at:

http://www.sunshineplace.org/index.php/sunprairiestrong

Impacted First Responders seeking assistance should contact the City’s Human Resources Department or their respective Chief.

Impacted building & property owners seeking assistance should contact the City’s Economic
Development Department by email at [email protected].

All applications seeking assistance should be submitted by Friday, August 17. Likely there will be another opportunity to request assistance if the near future but it is important to identify all as many needs as possible now to help evaluate the current and future need for funds. The applications will be reviewed the week following the August 17 deadline and distributions are expected to begin by late August. Submittal of an application does not guarantee any financial assistance through the fund. Availability of funds is subject to the community priorities established by the Relief Fund Committee, the competitiveness of the application and the availability of funds.
