Notable Cases

On Monday, 07-30-18 at approximately 8:29 p.m., Officer Greene was dispatched to the area of Crocker Avenue and Irvington Street on a report of an intoxicated male subject walking down the street and breaking beer bottles. Officer Greene arrived on scene and saw a subject intentionally throwing a beer bottle to the ground, causing the bottle to shatter and the liquid contents to spread across the sidewalk. Officer Greene contacted the subject and immediately noticed he was intoxicated. The male subject began to speak Spanish, and Officer Jackson-Berrios spoke with the subject. They arrested the subject, a 28-year old Daly City resident, for public intoxication.

On Tuesday, 07-31-18 at 7:50 a.m., Lt. Fox and Officer Maddison contacted a subject who was standing next to a vehicle on Park Plaza Drive near 87th Street. The vehicle had a 2018 registration tab on the license plate, but the dispatchers advised the registration for the vehicle had expired in 2015. The subject said he had purchased the vehicle with a friend, who was not listed as the registered owner. The subject verbally identified himself and said he was not on parole or probation; however, the dispatchers advised he was, indeed, on probation. When the officers searched the subject, they found an ankle monitoring device attached to the subject’s leg. The subject, a 53-year old San Jose resident, said he did not have any illegal items in his vehicle. Officer Maddison said he saw, in plain view on top of the center console, two glass pipes used to smoke controlled substances. Directly next to the pipes was a breath mints container containing three small baggies of methamphetamine. Officers cited the subject for possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and for displaying false registration tabs upon a vehicle.

On Tuesday, 07-31-18 at 10:25 a.m., Officer Mahan and Officer Sunga were dispatched to the 100 block of B Street on a report of an occupied suspicious vehicle. The vehicle was reported to be parked in the driveway of an abandoned house. Officers saw a female lying down in the backseat and knocked on the window to ask her to exit the vehicle. The female exited the vehicle through the rear passenger side door, leaving the door ajar. Officer Mahan asked the subject what she was doing there, and the subject said her vehicle had broken down, and she pulled it into the driveway to get it off the street. The subject had no identification on her but provided the officer with her name and birthdate. While Officer Sunga was speaking with the subject, Officer Mahan looked into the vehicle through the open passenger door. The subject became upset with the officer and attempted to close the door, nearly crushing Officer Mahan’s hand. The officers asked the subject if she had anything illegal in her vehicle, and the subject said no and did not consent to the officers request to search the vehicle. Officer Sunga shined his flashlight into the window and noticed a small clear baggie containing a white crystalline substance sitting on a makeshift shelf in the back seat. (The subject was living in her vehicle and had several shelving units and a small bed set up in the back seat.) The 23-year old subject was arrested for being in possession of a controlled substance. Officers then searched the vehicle and found a brown tar-like substance (believed to be heroin) wrapped in plastic. The subject repeatedly asked the officers if they were going to tow her car. When the officers advised they were going to tow it, they said the subject began to scream obscenities at them and said the drugs weren’t hers. The subject was transported to jail.

On Tuesday, 07-31-18 at 3:24 p.m., several officers were dispatched to a residence on the unit block of Westline Drive on a report of a possible in-progress residential burglary. The homeowner reported he was checking on his vacant residence and heard subjects talking inside the residence. The homeowner waited for the officers, along with the K-9, to arrive, and the officers found a male and a female subject inside a van in the garage. The van was fully loaded with boxes and items belonging to the victim. The female, a 40-year old Pacifica resident, said her boyfriend (the male) of approximately one year, lived next door, and he asked her to come over as needed help moving some of his neighbor’s stuff. The female and her 23-year old boyfriend gave conflicting stories as to why they were in the residence, and as to why some of the victim’s property (i.e. stereo system, A/C unit, range hoods, miscellaneous dishware and vases) was in her van. The female was arrested for residential burglary and for possession of stolen property over $950. The male was arrested for residential burglary, possession of stolen property over $950, possession of drug paraphernalia (glass pipe) and was placed on a parole hold.

On Friday, 08-03-18 at 1:27 a.m., a 24-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence after he lost control of the vehicle he was driving and flipped over near the exit of the car wash of the Shell Gas station on Gellert Boulevard.

On Friday, 08-03-18 at 4:45 p.m., Officer Hightower was at the Walgreens on San Pedro Road reviewing video footage from a previous case when an employee walked into the office and reported that two men were fighting in the lobby, and one of the subjects had a knife. Officer Hightower talked to the victim, a 68-year old Daly City resident, who said a man had pulled a knife on him after a brief argument. The victim said the suspect walked out of the store and into the Goodwill store. The suspect, a 53-year old San Francisco resident said he was exiting the store when the other subject was entering and that the subject bumped him. They engaged in an argument which led him to pull out a knife. After the victim threatened to call the police, he said the suspect walked out of the store. The suspect was placed under arrest for brandishing, criminal threats, possession of a controlled substance (heroin) and for an outstanding warrant.

On Friday, 08-03-18 at 11:00 p.m., a 53-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence after being involved in a collision at Mission Street and Citrus Avenue.

On Saturday, 08-04-18 at 1:21 a.m., Officer Sunga was dispatched to the police station to meet with a subject who said she was the victim of a brandishing an hour prior. The female, a 31-year old Broadmoor resident, said she was driving on San Pedro Road when a vehicle next to her changed lanes and almost caused a collision. The victim swerved and honked at the suspect vehicle, a dark newer model Chevrolet Traverse. The victim said the car stopped at El Camino Real at San Pedro Road when the passenger, described as a Hispanic female, 20’s, light complexion, long black hair wearing a black jacket, got out of the vehicle and called the victim out to a fight. The victim told the female she was not afraid of either of them, and the female got back into the Chevrolet. The victim said the driver then drove up to her and asked what the problem was. The victim said the driver, described as a Hispanic male, 25-years old, light complexion, wearing a red beanie and a white shirt, then pointed and waved a black handgun at her. The victim then drove away from the scene.
On Sunday, 08-05-18 at 10:21 p.m., Officer Covarrubias and Officer Collins were dispatched to the 6100 block of Mission Street on a report of a subject with a knife. Officers arrived to speak with the reporting party who said she was sitting at the bus stop at the corner of Evergreen Avenue and Mission Street when she was approached by a female who brandished a knife and continuously called her a “b-tch”. A woman from a neighboring business saw the subject yelling at the victim and went over to assist. The victim didn’t speak English, and the woman translated saying the subject threatened her with the knife, and then the woman tried to kick the victim but missed. The women provided a description of the subject, and Officer Shoopman located the subject and detained her. Both women positively identified the suspect. The officers placed the suspect, a 55-year old San Francisco resident, under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and for two outstanding warrants. The 43-year old victim was physically unharmed.

Community Events/Information

Summer Backpack Drive

The Daly City Peninsula Partnership Collaborative is partnering with the police and fire departments in Broadmoor, Colma and Daly City, along with the local Starbucks stores and selected gyms, to collect new backpacks and school supplies for needy students in the community. According to the Peninsula Partnership, it is estimated that a family of four living in San Mateo County needs an income of at least $94,000 in order to pay rent and make ends meet, yet these same Daly City families earn from $20,000 to $40,000 a year. They believe by providing new backpacks and school supplies to students identified as in the greatest need, they hope to equal the playing field. Their goal is to purchase 500 backpacks by August 10th. For more information, please visit www.dcpartnership.org or phone them at (650) 301-3305.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. Please note: the City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
