Advisory

Clean Water Action, a national non-profit citizen’s lobby, will be doing their annual canvass in the Township soon.

The Police Department want our residents to be aware that
Clean Water Action, a national non-profit citizen’s lobby, will be doing their annual canvass in the township soon. They will be conducting door-to-door campaign work, which includes education on specific legislative issues and fundraising for their lobbying efforts. This canvass operates within the hours that the Supreme Court has approved for such work (City of Watseka, et al. v. Illinois Public Action Council, no. 86-631, 1987): Monday through Friday from 4pm until 9pm, and Saturday from 11am until 7pm.
As a courtesy to communities in which they canvass, they notify each township before starting the annual work there, and fax their certificate of non-profit status. They also provide the Police Department a list of current authorized Clean Water Action staff. Due to the political nature or their work, the Supreme Court exempts Clean Water Action and other non-profits from registration requirements involving “solicitor permits” (Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, Inc, et al. v. Village of Stratton, Ohio, et al., no. 00-1737, 2002). Their canvassers do carry Clean Water Action identification with them.
