Crime Alert Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

On Wednesday, 07-25-18 at 8:10 p.m., Officer Skeehan and Officer Magalong were dispatched to a call of a suspicious person outside of Crunch Fitness. Serramonte Shopping Center security advised the subject was wandering around the parking lot and was stumbling. The officers contacted a subject who had difficulty keeping his eyes open and appeared extremely tired. The subject was standing near some backpacks, and the officers could see syringes sticking out of the pockets of one backpack. The subject, a 24-year old Pacifica resident, admitted to having Xanax in his possession. Officers cited the subject for that, as well as possession of methamphetamine and a pipe used to smoke methamphetamine.

On Thursday, 07-26-18 at 2:35 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of Brunswick Street on a report of a subject trying to open doors of several vehicles parked on the street. Officers contacted the subject, and they determined he was under the influence of a controlled substance. The subject became physically combative and kicked Officer Soyangco. The subject, a 45-year old San Francisco resident, was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance and for battery on a police officer.

On Thursday, 07-26-18 at 8:04 p.m., Officer Jackson-Berrios and Officer Sabins were dispatched to the Target store on a report of a male with a weapon, possible a “Taser” gun. The loss prevention officers at Target advised they attempted to make contact with the subject for shoplifting, and the subject pulled out a foot long “Taser”. The loss prevention officers said the subject didn’t say anything, but they believed he was under the influence of drugs. The loss prevention officers were not injured. Our officers were unable to find the subject. This investigation is continuing.

On Friday, 07-27-18 at 5:47 p.m., a 22-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence and hit and run after fleeing the scene of a collision at Callan Boulevard and Serramonte Boulevard. The subject left his identifying information in his vehicle, and officers contacted him shortly after and determined he was under the influence of alcohol.

On Sunday, 07-29-18 at 7:52 p.m., Officer Yip, Officer Clinkscales and Officer Sunga were dispatched to the Shell station on Hillside Boulevard on a report of a possible assault that just occurred. The officers talked to the reporting party (victim) who said she drove into the carwash and the car in front of her drove back and forth approximately 4-5 times. The victim told the officers that the car came close to hitting her. The victim said the subject parked her car in the carwash and left. The victim said she honked her horn because she couldn’t leave, and the car behind the victim also honked the horn. The victim said the subject became angry and began to hit her vehicle with her hands and phone. The victim said she slightly rolled down her window, and the suspect pulled it down with both hands. The suspect was upset because the victim said she was going to call the police. The victim said the suspect then hit her through the window with a closed fist one or two times. The victim said the suspect grabbed her cell phone from her hand and said, “You’re not going to call the police.” The victim asked the suspect to give her back the phone, but the suspect, described as a white or Hispanic female in her 30’s, 5’5”, 160 lbs., heavy set, with a light complexion, refused. The victim said she exited the vehicle and told the suspect to stop. The victim said the suspect grabbed her by the hair and hit her several times with a closed fist and possibly a cell phone. The victim said the suspect pushed her to the ground, causing her to hit her head, nose and face. The victim said the suspect threw her cell phone at her, got back into her vehicle and sped off from the car wash. During the attack, the victim’s 4 and 6 year old daughters were in the back seat. The victim, a 39-year old Brisbane resident, was treated by the doctor for a laceration on her head, a small fracture on her nose and also had a tooth (implant) knocked out by the suspect. This investigation is continuing.

Scams/Other

“Grammy?” Scam

On the previous bulletin, I wrote about a scam in which an 86-year old Daly City was duped out of $1,000 from a subject claiming to be an attorney representing her granddaughter who was involved in an “accident” and needed the money to get bailed out of jail. Well it happened again this week to an 89-year old Daly City resident who was scammed out of $3,000 in a very similar method.

All of us know people who are grandparents. Please warn them of this scam!!

Craigslist Check Scam

On Tuesday, 07-24-18, a 23-year old Daly City resident reported she was the victim of an attempted fraud. The victim said she had posted her bed frame for sale on Craigslist for $350. The victim said a man by the name of “Rodney David” contacted her and said he was interested in the bed frame. The victim said the subject sent her a cashier’s check via U.S. mail, and the check was made out for $1,850. The victim immediately noticed the amount was different and asked “Mr. David” why he made the check out for that amount. The victim said “Mr. David” told her $350 was for the purchase of the bed frame, and the extra $1,500 was for the moving company to pick up the bed frame from her address. The victim thought that was strange and had the check sent to her bank for review. An associate of the bank advised her it was likely a fraudulent check and advised her to not cash it. The victim said she texted “Mr. David” and told him she knew the check was fraudulent, and he did not respond to her. This is excellent to hear that the victim contacted her bank first. She potentially just saved herself from being duped out of $1,500!

Mobile Auto Body Scam

This occurred in Millbrae, but I wanted everywhere to be aware, as this is the fourth time it has occurred there. It could happen in Daly City. On Saturday, a 91-year old Millbrae resident was in his driveway and fixing his cracked tail lamp to his vehicle. The reporting party said he was approached by a male and a female subject who were in a dark gray van. The female asked if the reporting party wanted to sell his vehicle, and the reporting party declined. The reporting party said the female introduced her “brother Teddy” to him who offered to help fix the cracked tail lamp and a small door dent for $300. The reporting party wrote a check to “Teddy” for $300, but “Teddy” never showed up to complete the repair. Luckily the reporting party canceled the check before any loss was incurred. The reporting party said “Teddy” later called him and demanded more money from him, and the reporting party said he was no longer interested. The reporting party said “Teddy” began to cry, and the reporting party hung up on him.

PG&E Scam

A Daly City resident reported on “Nextdoor.com” that a man dressed in a lime green neon vest rang his doorbell last week and said he was from PG&E and was offering a discount of $17. The reporting party said the subject needed to see his bill to see if he’d qualify. The reporting party did not give this person any of his information. In this type of “scam”, the solicitors are hired by other companies to take people’s information and conduct a “supplier switch”. PG&E has advised they do not send customer representatives asking personal information from their customers. Summer Backpack Drive

The Daly City Peninsula Partnership Collaborative is partnering with the police and fire departments in Broadmoor, Colma and Daly City, along with the local Starbucks stores and selected gyms, to collect new backpacks and school supplies for needy students in the community. According to the Peninsula Partnership, it is estimated that a family of four living in San Mateo County needs an income of at least $94,000 in order to pay rent and make ends meet, yet these same Daly City families earn from $20,000 to $40,000 a year. They believe by providing new backpacks and school supplies to students identified as in the greatest need, they hope to equal the playing field. Their goal is to purchase 500 backpacks by August 10th. For more information, please visit www.dcpartnership.org or phone them at (650) 301-3305.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. Please note: the City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your e-mail. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
