A shooting on Proctors Knob Road Thursday morning, July 26 sent one man to the hospital and another to jail.
                Shortly before 8 a.m., McDowell County sheriff’s deputies and investigators were called to the area of 248 Proctors Knob Road off Jacktown Road to a possible shooting.
                They arrived to find 30-year-old Paul Edward Poteat, of 66 Copper Pot Road in Marion, in a car in the road at the end of Proctors Knob. Poteat was suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
                An investigation shows that Poteat and the suspect, 41-year-old Jason Lee “Whitey” Morgan, of 40 Proctors Knob Road, got into an argument, at which time Morgan brandished a handgun and shot Poteat.
                The victim was taken to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville.
                Morgan fled and was apprehended after a two-hour manhunt. He was taken into custody on outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court. Charges stemming from the shooting – assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, shooting into an occupied vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon – are forthcoming today by Detective Van Williams.
                An investigation continues.

Department of Motor Vehicles License and Theft Bureau, McDowell County Emergency Management, N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, McDowell County Rescue Squad and McDowell County EMS.
