Police Arrest Driver During SL Marina "Sideshow"

On Tuesday evening, SLPD officers responded to Mulford Point at the San Leandro Marina, after receiving reports of vehicles involved in “sideshow” activity, driving recklessly in the parking lot.  This led to the arrest of one man, whose car was also impounded by police.

At 5:00pm, SLPD received several calls from residents and visitors at the marina who reported seeing several cars spinning donuts in the parking lot.  Minutes later, when officers arrived, the illegal activities had already stopped.

Officers, committed to suppressing the dangerous, illegal driving, remained in the area to prevent it from occurring again.  At 6:45pm, while parked in the lot in identifiable police vehicles, they saw a white, 1988 BMW 325i begin to spin donuts in the middle of the parking lot, filling the air with smoke from the burning, rear tires.  A bystander, also associated with the vehicle, was in the immediate vicinity, video-recording the reckless driving.

Officers immediately stopped the BMW and arrested the driver, who police identified as 22 year old, Andrew Robles-Lara of Grass Valley, CA for driving recklessly and endangering others in the area.  Officers also impounded Robles-Lara’s BMW pursuant to CA law, which allows the vehicle to be impounded up to 30 days because it was used in the crime of reckless driving.

This type of reckless driving, commonly referred to as a “sideshow” is illegal and dangerous to everyone involved.  As seen in many media reports, sideshows occur frequently in many cities, as well as on freeways and bridges throughout the Bay Area, and are often promoted and organized through social media sites, making it hard for law enforcement to plan for and prevent them.  Sideshows can draw crowds of more than 1,000 people and hundreds of cars - many of which are driven in a reckless manner like the BMW in Tuesday’s incident.

“Unfortunately, many sideshow participants don’t recognize that their actions endanger others.  In yesterday’s incident, we are lucky that the driver didn’t lose control of his car and harm anyone,” stated Lt. Robert McManus.  “We thank those that called us yesterday, as we rely on our residents and visitors to help us stop crimes that affect our community.”

Following the arrest, Robles-Lara was booked into the San Leandro City Jail, and later released with a notice to appear in court on August 24th.  Reckless driving is a classified as a misdemeanor, and if convicted, may result in fine, imprisonment or both.
