Cases of Community Interest

Below are a few cases from the past week that may be of community interest.
 
BPD Case 18-40432
On July 18th at 17:15 pm, two young women were walking the 2500 block of Hillegass Avenue (approaching Dwight Way) when they noticed another woman sitting on the sidewalk.  As the two walked passed the woman on the sidewalk, the woman suddenly stood up and sprayed their faces with something that caused a burning sensation.  The suspect then ran away laughing.  The two victims were treated at the scene by Berkeley Fire personnel.  The suspect is described as White female, about 35 years old, with a skinny build, with short dark hair, wearing a green jacket.
 
BPD Case 18-40596
On July 19th at 1:44 pm, a suspect entered USE Bank (2350 Shattuck Avenue) and passed a note to the teller demanding money and then leaving the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.  The suspect was described as a male with dark skin, in his 40’s, wearing a light colored shirt and jeans.
 
BPD Case 18-40726
On July 20th at 1 am, officers responded to the 4th floor of Sather Garage for a reported shooting.  On arrival, officers located a man with gunshot wound.  At the scene, officers learned that the shooting happened after two friends got into a verbal argument.  The victim (25 year old male) was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.  A handgun as well as a quantity of Xanax was also recovered at the scene.
 
The suspect (Justin Andrew Reed, Male, 38 years old, San Pablo, CA) was arrested on suspicion of Assault with a Deadly Weapon, carrying a loaded/concealed firearm and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription.
 
BPD Case 18-40394
On July 20th at 1:14 pm, three suspects entered LuluLemon (1901 Fourth Street) and stole numerous items from inside.  The suspects then left the business without paying for the items (as seen in the video below).  If you recognize the suspects or have any information about the crime, please contact BPD’s Property Crimes Unit at (510) 981-5737.

BPD Case 18-41146
On July 21st at 10:35 pm, officers performed a security check of the Rosewood Apartment and spotted a few people walking away when they noticed officers in the area.  The officers found a backpack that was left behind, and inside that backpack they found a gun. During the subsequent investigation, a man told officers that some of the items in the backpack belonged to him — but he did not claim ownership of the gun.On July 22nd, officers searched the man’s apartment and found ammunition and firearm magazines, some of which fit the gun officers found in the backpack. The man (Reginald L Sinegal, Male, 34 years old, Berkeley, CA) was arrested on suspicion of carrying a loaded and concealed firearm and possession of large capacity magazine.
 
BPD Case 18-41174
On July 22nd at 1:21 am, officers on patrol heard the sound of gunfire coming from the area of Tenth Street and Delaware Street.  When officers arrived to the area, they discovered multiple gun casings on the ground and two homes that had been struck by bullets—located on the 1000 block of Delaware Street and the 1700 block of Tenth Street.  While officers spoke with people in the area, they discovered a 19 year old man who had been shot in the toe on the 1000 block of Delaware Street.
 
The man was transported to local hospital for treatment.  The investigation into this incident continues.  The Berkeley Police Department asks that if you have any information about this incident to contact BPD’s Homicide Unit at (510) 981-5741.
 
BPD Case 18-41512
On June 23rd at 7:55 pm, officers responded to 1550 Shattuck Avenue for a reported theft where the suspect was being detained by loss prevention.  According to store personnel, the suspect filled his bag with $300+ of baby formula and tried to leave without paying for it.  When Loss prevention confronted the suspect, physically resisted them.  Loss prevention were able to keep the suspect from leaving before officers arrived.
 
As officers arrived, the 2nd suspect waiting in a vehicle in the parking lot tried to get away by driving out of the parking lot and recklessly driving on Shattuck Avenue.  Officers caught up to the vehicle a few blocks away and successful took her into custody.
