Same Officer Arrests Two Felons in 2 Weeks with Loaded Firearms

Over the past two weeks, one San Leandro Police officer has stopped vehicles on separate occasions for traffic violations, resulting in the recovery of 3 firearms illegally possessed by the drivers of those cars.

Yesterday, at 5:00pm, an officer spotted a 1996 Buick sedan speeding on the Interstate 880 freeway near Davis St., estimating the car to be travelling between 80-90 mph as it drove south towards Hayward.  The driver exited onto Lewelling Blvd. in San Leandro and was subsequently stopped by the officer for the speed violation.

The officer learned that the driver, identified as 30 year old, Marquis Crenshaw of Oakland was a convicted felon and currently on probation with a search clause.

Officers searched Crenshaw’s Buick and found a loaded 9mm Glock pistol hidden behind a panel in the car’s dashboard.  Upon further inspection, the officer found that the someone had damaged the gun’s serial number in what police believe was an attempt to remove the serial number from the firearm.

Detectives continued their investigation at Crenshaw’s apartment located in the 1800 block of 74th Ave. in Oakland, where they recovered a loaded Springfield Armory XDS 9mm pistol from Crenshaw’s bedroom and several pills of a suspected illegal drug believed to be “ecstacy.”

The first arrest by the same officer occurred on July 10th, after he was patrolling the In-N-Out restaurant parking lot in the 15500 block of Hesperian Blvd. and stopped a SUV after he saw the driver commit several traffic violations.  This resulted in the arrest of a convicted felon, and recovery of a loaded, stolen semi-automatic pistol concealed in his vehicle.

“These arrests represent a small example of the great work that our officers do every day while protecting our San Leandro community,” stated Lt. Robert McManus. “Arrests like this and removing illegally-possessed firearms from the streets make it safer for everyone,” he said.

Crenshaw, who was arrested on July 23rd, is being held on suspicion of several gun-related charges, including being an ex-felon in possession of firearms.  He is also being held for violating of the terms and conditions of his probation.  Crenshaw is being held in lieu of bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and is expected to appear in court later this week.

Personal safety of our community is paramount.  We encourage the San Leandro community to record the details of what they observe and to report those details to the police.  This type of community involvement and partnership has proven to be a very effective crime prevention tool.  Citizens act as the eyes and ears of the community first, and the extended eyes and ears of the San Leandro Police Department.  Thank you for being a force-multiplier in our efforts to provide professional police services and safety to the community.
