Make Water Safety a Priority

Make Water Safety a Priority

Playing at the beach, at a water park, by a lake, or in a pool can be a real treat on a hot day. Water play can be a great source of fun and exercise.

When splashing around this summer, consider several steps to keep you and your children safe from aquatics injuries:
• Supervise children around water (e.g. bucket of water, bath tub, inflatable pool, rivers, lakes, ocean shoreline, hot tub, swimming pool) even if they know how to swim.
• Teach children not to run or mess around near the pool area.
• Never swim alone. Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards. The City of Santa Clara's Parks and Recreation Department offers public recreation swim staffed by certified lifeguards.
• Keep a phone nearby in case you need to call 9-1-1 for an emergency.
• Ensure that everyone in the family learns to swim well. Age-appropriate swim lessons are available through the Parks and Recreation Department.
• Install and use barriers (e.g. self-closing and/or latching gate, safety cover, pool alarm, etc.) around your home pool or hot tub.
• Keep toys that are not in use away from the pool and out of sight. Toys can attract young children to the pool.
• Enroll in a CPR/AED course to learn how to prevent and respond to emergencies. The American Red Cross offers a range of health and safety classes.
