TEAM RUBICON ASSISTS UAA WITH WILDFIRE MITIGATION

***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE***
Contact: 907-267-4999

The Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) welcomes Team Rubicon to the University of Alaska Anchorage campus this weekend to help coordinate a service project and training session for the military veteran’s group. Team Rubicon’s primary mission is providing disaster relief to those affected by natural disasters, either domestic or international. By pairing the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders, medical professionals, and technology solutions, Team Rubicon aims to provide the greatest service and impact possible.

The designated project is a wildfire mitigation and safety enhancement treatment near student housing on the UAA campus. Densely spaced trees will be thinned and pruned to provide a fire safety buffer around structures and adjacent to the trails used by students to walk to classes. AFD’s forester and UAA grounds maintenance staff will assist the group in establishing the project specifications, location of the work performed and cleanup of the vegetation by chipping and recycling of the woody debris. The group will complete their wildfire mitigation and chainsaw training on Friday and Saturday and begin the service project on Saturday afternoon, completing the work by late Sunday afternoon.

Through continued service, Team Rubicon seeks to provide our military veterans with three things they lose after leaving the military: a purpose, gained through disaster relief; community, built by serving with others; and identity, from recognizing the impact one individual can make. Coupled with leadership development and other opportunities, Team Rubicon looks to help veterans transition from military to civilian life.

AFD and UAA would like to join all of Anchorage’s residents in welcoming Team Rubicon to the first of hopefully many more projects and training to come, within the Municipality of Anchorage!
